The author of the book I’tiqâd-nâma, Mawlânâ Diyâ’ ad-dîn Khâlid al-Baghdâdî al-’Uthmânî (b. 1192, A.H./1778 in Shahrazûr in the north of Baghdad, d. 1242/1826 in Damascus, quddisa sirruh), was called al-’Uthmânî because he was a descendant of ’Uthmân Dhu’n-nûrain, the third caliph (radî-Allâhu ta’âlâ’ anh). While he was teaching his brother Hadrat Mawlânâ Mahmûd Sâhib the famous Hadîth al-Jibrîl, the second hadîth ash-sherîf in Al-ahâdîth al-arba’ûn by the great ’âlim an-Nawawî, Hadrat Sâhib requested his elder brother to write a commentary to that hadîth. Mawlânâ Khâlid, to please his brother’s lighted heart, accepted the request and explained the hadîth ash-sherîf in Persian in a book, giving it the title I’tiqâdnâma. Its Turkish translation, Herkese Lâzım Olan Îmân, was translated into English (the present version Belief and Islam), French (Foi et Islam) and German (Glaube und Islam) in 1969, and later, into several other languages, such as Tamil, Yoruba, Hawsa, Malayalam and Danish. May Allâhu ta’âlâ bless the innocent youth with reading this book and learning the correct i’tiqâd (faith) conveyed by the ’ulamâ’ of Ahl as-Sunna!

As a full-time author, I have what is possibly the best ‘job’ in the world, though I do not see writing as a job. Having been blessed with a vivid and active imagination, I am never short of material around which to build a story and have enough backlog material to last several lifetimes. In any event, storylines are everywhere. Just look around you - wherever you are - and there’s your story! Even a pitch-black room is a story in itself if you have the imagination. A writer without imagination is called a blank page, or ‘writer’s block (which I do not believe even exists). That said, my work tends to include elements of humanity, loss and grief, revenge, retribution, riddles and a plethora other hooks to keep readers turning pages (or hitting ‘Next”). Some of my simple riddles in stories have yet to be solved! (see “The Importance of Looking Right” for an example.) If you’re a ‘skipper’, i.e. you tend to ‘skip’ over blocks of text, then my work is definitely not for you. Very often in my stories, EVERY word is there for a reason, and if you’re a ‘skipper’ you are sure to miss a critical clue or aspect of the story which may render it meaningless to you. Who skips over stories anyway? Why read at all if you’re going to do that? In one of my stories, it is a single punctuation mark that emphasises the point of the story. Although it is a single ‘ . ’, the relevance of that single period runs into several paragraphs. The story in question is “Small Mercies”. All authors include aspects of their own life and personality in their writing. When I read back through some of my material, I often wonder how true this is. If a psychologist were to attempt to compose a ‘profile’ of me based on my writing, I would certainly either be the weirdest or most wanted person on earth! All of my stories contain a moral in one form or another and I like to keep these obscure and make the reader think about what they have just read. I never ‘spell it out’ in any of my stories. If you didn’t ‘get it’, your either skipped over a critical clue or misunderstood a vital part of the story. Read it again – the answer is ALWAYS there! Some people have read my short stories several times before they finally see the clues. And then they find them all! Try “To Be Frank” as a classic example of clues dotted all over the place. Many readers do not get this story, even right at the very end, where I DO spell it out. Amazing. As for my ebook entitled, “Li’l Red in the Hood”, I am always flabbergasted at how many people simply do not get what that story is all about. 99% of readers completely miss the point! Hint: it is British comedy! That may explain a lot . . . I take great pains to include these little titbits in my work, often taking days just to write a few paragraphs to ensure that the words are precisely the way they need to be. For me, writing is like building the innards of a fine Swiss watch. The face (cover) is easy, but the mechanism (story) is what makes it . . . well, Swiss. And therein lies the difference between experienced and new writers. New writers have yet to learn the subtle nuances and tend to blurt out stories, rather than sneakily guiding and misleading their readers and then smacking them with a punchline. My regular readers know that I make my books free for the first 24 hours or so, but then I charge for them. See my various works on the reasons for this. I don’t give away my work other than for promotional reasons. Freebies don’t pay the mortgage! Newbies just don’t get this. Between May and December of 2001, I sold just over 34,000 copies through Smashwords’ Distribution Channels, although I publish mainly on Amazon. 2012 looks like being a better year and hopefully we have now seen the end of all the vampire/werewolf/lesbian tedium and the real, adult fiction can come to the fore once again. My journey to Green-Capitalism "there is no need for there to be a 'loser' between economic growth and environmental protection" I have spent most of my professional life identifying the need for change in organisations then helping those organisations to make those changes. From turning around insolvent companies and integrating corporate acquisitions through to culture change programs on factory floors and in sales teams. Like most people deeply involved in business, my focus was on this quarter's profit, this month's sales, this week's cash flow. I paid scant regard to what was happening in the rest of the world, especially anything vaguely environmental. This started to change when my family flew into Manchester airport in 2000 to join me in the UK. It was raining. Hardly surprising for Manchester. Over the next few months it continued to rain and there was more and more discussion on climate change. At the time I dismissed this, along with 'peak oil' and 'global warming', as fear mongering from people who should get a 'proper job'. Then in April 2001, it was announced that the previous 12 months had been the wettest in the UK since records began. And records began in the 17th Century. That caused me to wonder a wee bit. But only for a bit as I soon went back to my insular business world and stayed there, even when we returned to Australia to find ourselves in the middle of the 'hundred year drought'. Then, in 2003 The Business Council of Australia invited me to join their working group that was preparing a range of scenarios for Australia in 20 years time. 'Aspire Australia 2025' was put together over 12 months by running workshops with seventy of the leading thinkers in Australia. We looked at every aspect of life in Australia. Our competitiveness, strategic defence, values and norms, our governance and our sustainability. That experience triggered the start of my journey. A journey that was initially focussed on climate change for the more that I researched the arguments for and against, the more I came to the conclusion that this was a 'clear and present threat' to our quality of life. It also quickly became clear that, until the business community took the risk seriously, then we would always struggle to make the changes needed to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. And here was where the nub of the problem was. Business had great difficulty seeing how we could both, reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and also maintain the economic growth that is so fundamental to their business success. In the same way that business saw the 20th Century as a battle between labour and capital, many now saw the 21st Century as being a battle between economic growth and environmental protection. Yet, there was no real 'loser' in the battle between labour and capital, so there is no need for there to be a 'loser' between economic growth and environmental protection. Hence my promotion of Green-Capitalism. I write, I speak and I present on how we can have our cake and eat it too. For those promoters of environmental protection who are cynical of capitalism, I would ask you to remember that capitalism has dragged millions of people around the world out of the miserable existence so well documented by Charles Dickens and that capitalism, properly motivated, can achieve rapid change in society. For the promoters of economic growth who see environmentalists as a threat to our prosperity, I would ask you recognise we live on a planet of finite resources with a delicate ecosystem. The sooner we modify our business practices to use renewable resources without unnecessarily damaging our ecosystem, the more confident we can be that our prosperity can continue for our kids and grandkids.

I don't think saying 'I'm a writer' is enough to describe what I actually do. I like to entertain, and I use writing as a medium to do that. That then makes me a (and yeah, I obviously use a keyboard),... a... what's a good word? How about, a Pen-tertainer? I'm a Pentertainer ... I live in Coventry, England, but am originally from the North West of the country. I've been in Coventry for 21 years, and the hardest part was learning how to use a knife and fork and other domestic things after spending so much time up there in the frozen wastelands tearing chunks of meat off the kill after roasting it on a fire. Mind you, I'm not entirely re trained to life in the City, as quite a few people I've met down here do still talk in grunts; I'm one of the few who can understand them, and so, I work part time in the DSS claims office. (not true, but wouldn't that be so cool if it was). I myself got told off years ago by a stern faced lady in the claims office. I was on the Jobseekers/New Start course (Course? LOL), and I told my claims officer that I enjoyed going down there ... "Mr Lassut! You aren't supposed to enjoy it!" ... Her T shirt should have given it away before I opened my mouth. It read: 'I hate what I'm told to hate ... that means YOU' Last time I saw her she was in the fancy dress shop near Argos, buying a Gadaffi costume with mask. I thought she was going to a fancy dress do, but now look! ... I think she was investigating international claimant's Nat Insurance numbers, but got a little carried away. Bless her cotton socks.
