Author bio:
I'm retired and home is Orlando, Florida. I started writing a number of years ago just before the internet came into our lives. I was very serious about developing my writing skills. Even though I was writing mainly for my own pleasure and satisfaction, not as means of making a living. After a few feeble attempts at getting published, I soon lost interest. A recent gift was an ebook reader which I've enjoyed immensely. This got me thinking about the stories and poetry I wrote years ago. Reading my old stuff, I felt that that mine compared favorably. So, I decided to try publishing in ebooks and see if any readers are interested. I intend to submit a book of my short stories and a book of poetry. Over the years I've had a number of interests in addition to writing. I became interested in gems and minerals after some family members retired and moved to Franklin, North Carolina. During visits there I became aware of the gem mining in that area. My interest in North Carolina history developed while working on my family's genealogy. I discovered that my ancestors arrived in North Carolina from Scotland in the late 1700's. More recently I've done nature photography, some of which I smugly call "Art Photography". (Maybe, maybe not!)
Destination Destination "B": An Adventure In The Andes by Christopher David Petersen March 22, 2011 Free! 54800 words Read a sample
Author bio:
Christopher David Petersen (1963 - 20?? I just checked... I'm not dead yet). Born and raised in Connecticut. As a child, I was always daring and reckless. Never one to let common sense stand in the way of a great adventure, my bold feats of stupidity were legendary... Huckleberry Finn would have been proud. "Surprisingly", that same spirit carried over into adulthood, as I sought out entertainment that included: scuba diving; ski Mountaineering; mountain biking; Rock, Ice and Mountain climbing; flying planes; golf, motorcycles, the stock market and of course, experimentation with various alcoholic refreshments. Later in life, writing became an extension of my deep desire to experience "new and exciting worlds". I have written several books, but none have been published through any formal channels... I've heard the process is long, painful and laborious, the thought of which sickens me. My foray into e-publishing came after a friend suggested my works could fetch dollars instead of dust inside my sock drawer... a righteous observation. My recent publications are the result of this advice. Further adventure/suspense novels are soon to be released. An engineer by trade, I have worked all over the U.S. and usually write in my spare time... that is when I'm not enjoying a bottle of Scotch and a quality cigar. I am a naturally long-winded individual, so writing is what happens when I can't get anyone to listen to me anymore... I love all kinds of genres but gravitate more towards suspense. There is nothing like the build up to a great climax... What a rush! Please visit me at: http://christopherdavidpetersen.wordpress.com

Usually I can point north, no matter where I am. Growing up on endless High Plains vistas overlaid with right-angled gravel roads taught me that. My home is in Austin now, but I didn't come here straight away. Before Kansas there was New York, and afterward a few other gritty cities. When I was a teenager I ground gears in fuming semi trucks that strained under the load of a bulldozer or a backhoe. I operated those machines, too. Most of the time I even kept them upright. Later, between the time I quit college and then finished, I climbed splintery telephone poles in the fresh air. Sometimes sideways snow or stinging hornets freshened the air too much, though. For a few years, I put on a shirt and tie and managed a big team of telecommunications technicians and managers. We tore through mountains of trouble tickets and restored crashed networks. When I landed in Texas, most everybody told me they "weren't unhappy." Progress... Everything runs its course, and now I am a writer. My novel, Church of the God Particle, is forthcoming. Meanwhile, here are a couple of short stories so you can gauge my style. David

Ann Levingston Joiner is a native of Orange, Texas, where she lived through her mid-thirties. At that time, she was a stay-at-home mom who spent her free time volunteering and writing poetry in a spiral-bound journal. After returning to college during the late nine-teen seventies, she moved her children to Houston and began her career as a high-school English teacher. Teaching in experimental programs, she wrote curriculum, authored textbook supplements and conducted workshops to help students develop their writing skills. Before she retired in 2002, she developed the English and Language Arts portion of her school’s computer-based credit recovery program. During the years of her teaching career, she pursued an interest in comparative mythology, particularly focusing on the works of Joseph Campbell and the Hero’s Journey. After retiring, she moved to San Antonio, Texas, to be closer to her children, and to pursue a new career as a writer. Her published works include two poems, “Lady Audrey” and “The Rest Home,” and a non-fiction work, A Myth in Action: The Heroic Life of Audie Murphy. Now a grandmother, her current interests include genealogical research and writing fictionalized stories about the lives of her ancestors. She is also working on a series of fantasy western novels, set in the Texas Hill Country and involving its legendary Enchanted Rock.

Otherwise, alone in a quiet room playing a Dowland lute transcription on my classical guitar is something close to spiritual. I write about people, their relationships and the dynamics within. I write books, short stories and TV scripts with a leaning towards drama and black comedy. I have been published and had several scripts considered. I enjoy illustrating the wide range of emotions experienced in life by people of both genders and the permutations of social and personal cultural influences. I like to reach out and to make contact with readers walking beside them and not leaving them before I have evoked within them thought provoking emotions strung between tragedy and joy. I am a person touched by the irony of life and human frailty. Writing is as much a need for me as a want. Many years ago a complete stranger stopped me on the street and she said, “You will always work for a living” which is proving to be true. Today I work hard and don’t play enough. Instead I find myself traversing internalised continents exploring the complexities of life. Sometimes I have experienced life to be hard hitting, startling and scary which is true for so many people. I love my family and enjoy reading, gardening, painting and travelling.

I must in all honesty, update this entry, for I stumbled onto the magic key to post a story on Smashwords. It was operator error not one of the poltergeist that I’m sure came preloaded in my computer that prevents me from getting what I want from it. For those of you who didn’t read this bio before—which I’m sure includes the rest of the world’s population—I repeat: I am an old man who loves to write. I started decades ago—the exact number is irrelevant—on a cast iron framed manual typewriter that would now serve little purpose beyond a boat anchor. I love composing fiction on the computer, mainly because of the spell check feature. Why someone who can’t spell worth a damn wants to write, I’ll never be able to explain. I take solace in the knowledge that some well-known writers throughout history were so afflicted. However, I must confess, that is about as far as I can go into this—to me—frightening world of cyberspace. I don’t have accounts on face book (wouldn’t touch it with a ten-foot pole. Almost nightly the news is filled with stories of people murdered by people they have contacted there.) I feel the same way about Myspace, a blog or personal web site. I don’t tweet or twit or what ever that is. That really seems silly--just call them and talk! So I’ll be contented to write and enjoy retirement until the final heartbeat or wayward city buss runs me over.
Are You Positive? by Stephen Davis Are You Positive? by Stephen Davis Oct. 03, 2010 Free! 116401 words Read a sample
Author bio:
In his sixty-five years, Stephen Davis has been (in chronological order) one of the co-creators of "Up With People," a Physician’s Assistant in the U.S. Army (Vietnam vet), a commercial airline pilot, an Arizona State Senator, an Aide to L. Ron Hubbard in the Church of Scientology, President of an international management consulting firm (WISE), Director of Development and professor at Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic, computer software designer, horse whisperer, and captain of a whale and dolphin research ship. He is the author of a number of books and won the George Washington Medal of Honor from Freedoms Foundation for his published article, "The Government Versus the Economy." In his own words… Like you, and many others, I’ve spent a lot of time in my life trying to find answers to some very simple questions: Who am I? Where did I come from? How did I get here? What am I doing here? Why is my life the way it is? My personal quest began at age nineteen when I went to work with Edgar Cayce’s son at the Association for Research and Enlightenment in Virginia Beach. I took the opportunity to study as many of Cayce’s “readings” as I could from their original transcripts. From there I went deeper into parapsychological and psychic research, meeting and talking with such notables (at the time) as Dr. J.B. Rhine, who founded the first parapsychology lab at Duke University; Ruth Montgomery ("A Search for Truth"); and Lynn Schroeder and Sheila Ostrander ("Psychic Discoveries Behind the Iron Curtain"). By the time I reached my twenty-fifth birthday, I owned a theosophical library of several thousand books. In the next decade I would become a personal “Aide” to L. Ron Hubbard in the Church of Scientology and achieve “OT6” status. By the time I turned forty-five, I had also dabbled in "A Course in Miracles," Urantia, Eckankar, channeling, Kundalini Yoga, meditation, Numerology, astrology, Tai Chi, Focusing, and Rosicrucianism. I read all the “Seth” books, along with Walsch's "Conversations with God" and Sitchin’s "Earth Chronicles." I attended numerous self-help seminars and workshops, tried "The Secret," listened to Abraham, watched "What the Bleep Do We Know," and learned everything I could from Peter Marshall, John Bradshaw, Sai Baba, Krishnamurti, Deepak Chopra, Eckart Tolle, and others. I even studied conventional religions — Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. — and at one time planned on becoming an Episcopal priest. In the end I still couldn’t find a satisfactory answer to even one of my simple questions — at least not an answer that worked well enough for me and everyone else to create a happy and fulfilling life on a continuous and daily basis. But I knew there had to be some grain of truth in most of these spiritual philosophies — sometimes well hidden and hard to get at, but some truth none the less. Yet no single philosophy or practice or technique worked for very long, or satisfied me, or produced the kind of life I longed for or believed was possible. Something was just a little “off” in every one of them that seemed like it wasn’t really true, and made both the “old-age” and “new-age” theories come up short. So I kept searching, putting together a giant jigsaw puzzle, using pieces from everything I had learned along this spiritual journey; and I began to scout a new path toward serenity of being. I now have those answers I so desperately needed and wanted, and the jigsaw puzzle is virtually finished. The result is my latest book, "Butterflies Are Free To Fly: A New and Radical Approach to Spiritual Evolution."

Hey! First of all, thanks for picking my work to read! I love to write and tell stories, and I have been doing it since I could hold a pen. I love zombies, the italian mafia, and serial killers. Not in that same order and not for the same reasons. I love to read books in bed, at work, in the car, in the tub, in the air, when I'm mad, when I'm happy, when I'm hungry....ect I'm very blunt. I'm very sarcastic. I'm damn funny and cute to boot. Normally, in all of my stories you'll read some reference to rock n'roll music, Joshua Homme (my favourite rock star), and/or Queens of the Stone Age (my favourite rock band). If you don't see these things then it's probably not one of my stories. And if you don't like these things, tough titty. My favourite colour is purple :D Stephen King is my favourite author. After reading, movies are my second love. My stories are meant to make you laugh, excite you, thrill you, but most of all, entertain you. After all, writing is one of the oldest sort of entertainment there is. I am looking for literary representation, so fill free to message me for any information. Don't forget to leave a REVIEW!! Enjoy.

Thank you for visiting my profile. Throughout each of our lives, stories continuously happen all around us. What's thrilling is expressing them on paper, yet presenting the story to you with grace and clarity is in itself another story. In addition, we writers share a great challenge of maintaining your attention, never an easy task. Hence, my goal is to present stories that move your heart. I am from San Antonio, Texas, and after decades of a successful career in real estate, I still live in this great state. Most of my novelettes, novellas, and short stories are inspired by true events and take place only in Texas settings. I attempt to keep my writing style clear and direct, which can be enjoyed from the young to the old. In several of the stories, I provide Texas facts with the violence of self defense battles and natural disasters as well as moving, emotional struggles then combine them with moral fortitude. By keeping the reading time of some of the stories no longer than the length of a movie, the intent is to spark interest in those who dislike reading. "Writing opens the window to our souls, yet reading opens the door. If I can inspire anyone to read, then I feel successful in my endeavor." My stories: "Monster At My Window" (Novella) "Moonshiner, The Wolf" (Novella) "Hannibal~A True Story" (Short Story) "Rabbi's Books" (Short Story) "Visiting Mary" (Short Story) "Flood of 1965" (Short Story) "Steven" (Short Story) ~~~~ REVIEWS ~~~~ "Moonshiner, The Wolf" 1. This book helps us to understand two things: One, life is about the realization that if you know something has to be done, be self-reliant and do it, which in turn creates a strong sense of worth. And two, for some of us it can be difficult to know others as deeply as we might like to, especially those we love the most. Be good to those you love so you can live with them after this life, forever and ever." Andrew Campbell 2. "Kudos! A heart-wrenching story that entices you to keep reading. It's well written and certainly appropriate for all ages. Loved reading it." Thomas Holden 3. "A moving story from beginning to end, but one scene is a real tear-jerker." - Alpine Avalance, Alpine, Tx. Valerie P. 4. " 'Moonshiner, The Wolf' tells the tale of a courageous West Texas ranch woman. She befriends a wolf who becomes her lifetime guardian. Don't miss out, read it!"-- Bandera County Courier Editor, Bandera, Tx. Carolyn Edwards. "MONSTER AT MY WINDOW" 1. "A highly recommended thriller! Good battle scenes and good plot will hold your interest all the way through. Not one unneccesary or boring word in the entire story as the author does not force elements that disrupt the flow. The characters come to life and the setting fits like a glove. It begins with an up close casting of a young daughter who tells the truth and from there it unfolds into a unique storyline when friends face up to creatures that infiltrate a south Texas town. The end will leave you wanting more thrills, I guarantee it." David Martinelli 2. "Great Read! I thought this book would be all about monsters, but I got more out of it than just a monster story. This book reminds people that no matter how a child describes something, you should always listen and hear them! The way a child views something is not always the way we adults view them. Great book! To me, much more than a monster story." Wanda S. 3. "Different, but interesting." R.em "Hannibal~A True Story" 1. The storyline in this short story produces no punches as the author describes her survival against an animal that was never taught love." Kristina Howells, France author "VISTING MARY" 1. "This short story is charged with emotion and the imagery is fantastic as well --- keep writing." Heather Kitt "THE RABBI'S BOOKS" 1. "Excellent point of view. From the atrocities depicted in Elie Wiesel's "Night" to the haunting scene of Schindler's List, these events truly are worth teaching. To think that certain schools would have the nerve to excuse the matter is absolutely disappointing. Bravo to you, Nancy, for portraying that point of view and doing it so well!" Shane Ryan, writer "Flood of 1965" 1. "I felt like I was a part of the story, good description." Laura Everly Note from author: "In December the Christmas short story "Visiting Mary" was chosen for publication by the editors of four newspapers throughout Texas, "The Bandera County Courier" in Bandera County, "The Leader" in Dallas, Texas," La Prensa San Antonio", and "El Hispano News," Dallas, Texas." I am a small town girl with big dreams. I grew up in a small coastal county call Pamlico County in the town of Reelsboro North Carolina. Growing up in such a country area there wasn't much to do, so I developed a wide fantasy finding solace in writing poetry and songs. After high school I left my little secure coastal town to discover other parts of the country. It was a sad and lonely time, but also fun and exciting time in my life. I had too many emotions to process so I started to put it all down on paper. That became the start of my first novel, which I have yet to finish. My first complete novel entitled Protector was a dream come true. It was such a wonderful and daunting process. I am currently working on the sequel entitled Protect Me. Writing is such a passion of mine and will continue to be whether I become successful with it or not.

I wrote about robots. When I was a kid, my first story was about robots that looked like people: the only survivors of a world-wide nuclear war. What can I say? I grew up in the 70's. Since then I've sculpted all manner of stories about all sorts of topics. Science Fiction and Fantasy still remain favorites of mine and, usually, what I can express in speculative fiction I'd rather not express in other formats. I love short stories and am working on making this writing bug that I've harbored for so many years finally work for me. Here goes nothing.
