Irreverent Distractions No4. The Fat of the gLand | by Frankie Lassut June 10, 2011 | Free! | 5318 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I don't think saying 'I'm a writer' is enough to describe what I actually do. I like to entertain, and I use writing as a medium to do that. That then makes me a (and yeah, I obviously use a keyboard),... a... what's a good word? How about, a Pen-tertainer? I'm a Pentertainer ... I live in Coventry, England, but am originally from the North West of the country. I've been in Coventry for 21 years, and the hardest part was learning how to use a knife and fork and other domestic things after spending so much time up there in the frozen wastelands tearing chunks of meat off the kill after roasting it on a fire. Mind you, I'm not entirely re trained to life in the City, as quite a few people I've met down here do still talk in grunts; I'm one of the few who can understand them, and so, I work part time in the DSS claims office. (not true, but wouldn't that be so cool if it was). I myself got told off years ago by a stern faced lady in the claims office. I was on the Jobseekers/New Start course (Course? LOL), and I told my claims officer that I enjoyed going down there ... "Mr Lassut! You aren't supposed to enjoy it!" ... Her T shirt should have given it away before I opened my mouth. It read: 'I hate what I'm told to hate ... that means YOU' Last time I saw her she was in the fancy dress shop near Argos, buying a Gadaffi costume with mask. I thought she was going to a fancy dress do, but now look! ... I think she was investigating international claimant's Nat Insurance numbers, but got a little carried away. Bless her cotton socks. |

He may or may not have fathered many children. He may even be one of your children. I guess he couldn’t be because he was never born, so he will never die. Echo Romeo is ageless and timeless. Echo Romeo is forever. Echo Romeo is a pseudonym, an alias, a nom de plume because writing is dangerous. There are people’s feelings, situations, reputations and/or opinions to step on. Names have been changed and events dramatized to protect the innocent. |

| Author bio: Nothing really interesting to say about me. I live in Edinburgh, I don't know what I would put on the inside of a book jacket to make me sound interesting. I might just make stuff up. The Short bedtime stories are freebies. Based on stories I made up for my daughters. They're not as I originally told them as they changed with each telling but similar. The short story collection is also free, I hope you enjoy the seven stories up there. Some of them are on the McStorytellers page. You may find some more of my work there in the future (it's free to read as well). The films that had their names changed is a bit of a laugh really. I started as a joke and then I took it seriously. It will get longer as I find new things to rant about. |

The Honey That Came From The Sea | by Sheena Blackhall Jan. 29, 2012 | Free! | 90267 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: As on Wiki: Sheena Blackhall (b. Sheena Booth Middleton) was born in 1947 in Aberdeen, daughter of the manager of Strachan's Deeside Omnibus Service, Charles Middleton, and his second cousin, farmer's daughter Winifred Booth. She was educated in Aberdeen, but summered in Ballater for many years. Her brother, Ian Middleton, was an accomplished organist and clavichord player, who was the manager of a merchant bank in São Paulo, Brazil, where he settled and died.[2] During the typhoid epidemic in Aberdeen of 1964, Blackhall was hospitalized in the town's City Hospital for several weeks.[3] The family transport firm, owned by her aunt, closed as a side effect of this. After a year's study at Gray's School of Art, Blackhall passed a teaching diploma and worked for a time as a special needs teacher, marrying and raising a family of 4 in this period, when she wrote children's stories for BBC Radio Scotland. In 1994 she obtained a Bsc (Hons. Psych) from the Open University, going on to gain an M.Litt with Distinction from Aberdeen University in 2000. From 1998-2003 she was Creative Writing Fellow in Scots at [4] Aberdeen University's [1] Elphinstone Institute and is currently attached to the Institute as an Honorary Research Associate. In 2003 she travelled as part of a group to Washington, showcasing Scotland's culture as a guest of the Smithsonian Institution. In 2007 she was Creative Writing Tutor at the Institute of Irish and Scottish studies at King's College, and two years later was Writer in Residence during Aberdeen University's Word Festival.[5] In April 2009 she was inaugurated as Makar[6] for Aberdeen [7] and the North East of Scotland.[8] She has won the Robert McLellan tassie for best Scots short story 3 times (1989,1990,2001) and the Hugh MacDiarmid trophy for best Scots poem 4 times (1990,2000,2001,2010). In 1992 she shared the Sloane Award with Matthew Fitt from St. Andrew's University. Other prizes include awards from the Doric Festival, the Bennachie Baillies, and from the TMSA for ballad writing and traditional singing. She has twice been shortlisted for the Callum Macdonald Poetry Pamphlet prize (2005 & 2009). In 2007, Lallans Magazine awarded her the William Gilchrist Graham prize for best Scots short story. She has also been shortlisted for the McCash poetry prize. Blackhall worked alongside Aberdeen's well loved 'first lady of drama' Annie Henderson Inglis MBE at Aberdeen Arts Centre, from 2003-2010 delivering weekend storytelling and drama workshops for three to eight year olds. |

Pumpkin Jack Skull and Other Tales of Terror | by Jacob M. Drake Feb. 27, 2010 | Free! | 63691 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Jacob Drake is the author of various Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction and Erotica books, all available on Smashwords. His only problem in writing is not having enough time to write to completion all the stories he gets in his head. "If I wrote constantly until the day I died I still would never be able to exhaust the imagination that is the source of these stories. "I've always loved reading, so somewhere along the line it only seemed natural that I would sit down and start writing the type of stories I like to read. And that's only because I can't always find a book I want to read that encompasses the type of story I want. Sure, there are lots of great authors out there, but they don't always have their next new novel in my hands at the time I want to read it. Certainly there won't ever be another new book by Robert Heinlein or Isaac Asimov, though I wish with all that's in me there were. "I wrote my first story in high school for an English class. Had no idea what I was going to write until Sunday night (This was due the next day) when I sat down at my typewriter (Yes, this was back in the Stone Age before PCs came available) and started pounding on the keys. I turned in the finished story the next day and received an "A". "But I didn't write anything else (except songs, of which I have more than 100 finished) for many years, mostly due to the fact of raising a family and trying to be responsible (I hate that word). That came about because I had a story in me banging at the inside of my head, demanding to be let out. This time I sat down at the keyboard at my PC and began writing. I don't recall how long it took to complete that story, but it's now published as "Parallels: Book One - Heroes Enjoined Series". "I was quite satisfied with how that turned out, so a bit later I wrote the sequel to that book and called it "XKALIBUR". I then wrote a smattering of horror stories as well as a few more books and then a bunch of stories based on female superheroes who get into - ahem - trouble each and every time they go out on patrol. "But none of these stories ever saw publication and that was okay with me (to a point), because I realized that deep down inside of me I was a writer and I had stories that kept screaming at me to write them. So I did, even though I had nowhere to publish them. My wife well knows how many times I said, "I just want my stories out somewhere so other people can read them! What good does it do if they sit on my computer and no one else can enjoy them?" "I tried getting book publishers interested in my works, but they wouldn't even deign to read my intro letter. Many other authors know that feeling, too. I attempted to get an agent, with pretty much the same results. Most agents are too busy trying to place the stories for the author's they already represent. "I then read something on the internet one day while searching for online publishers. Someone had published his story at a place called Smashwords.com and it hadn't cost him a cent. I don't recall who that was, but I wish I could thank him for having the sense to write that blurb where I could read it. "I entered the name into my browser bar and hit "enter". Sure, I had to register, but that was free, so I did. Figuring out how to get my stories formatted properly in order to get them uploaded onto Smashwords was a bit of a chore, but Mark Coker's Style Guide was pretty much clear on the subject and eventually I had it all done for my first book. "Once "Parallels" was published online I was like a little kid on Christmas morning with a tree filled with presents underneath. "Within the next month I had all of my completed stories formatted and uploaded, which meant I had to take all my horror stories and put them together with a book title. Then I had to do the same for my B.A.B.E.S. stories, but that worked easy enough, once I figured out what program to use (Picasa3) to make covers with. "Now I work on getting my latest novels written so they can join the rest of my 'family' of eBooks that are now available on all the eBook retailers' sites. "Not all of my books are for everyone, especially my erotica classifications, like the "Complete Book of B.A.B.E.S." and my "Rebirth of the Gods" book. Some day I'll get around to writing the promised second book to that series, honest. For the time being, I've been channeling my energy into writing the books for my vampire series, the first of which is "Forever Undead" and the second one is "Darkness in the Light". Now I have the third in this series, "Forever the Dark Grave", and then I'll write "Darkness in the Draca Legacy". After that I'll link these all together with "Forever Darkness". Recently I got the idea of writing a bunch of short stories based on the vampire bar (Vampir Sange) that appears in "Darkness in the Light" and publishing it under the title "Vampir Sange - Dark Tales From the Blood Bar". That one will be written. "I'm enjoying my vampire realms too much to do anything else right now, but I am open to hearing from those who read my books." Care to write and make suggestions?
