Soul Identity | by dennis batchelder April 11, 2009 | Free! | 112200 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I have been writing for ten years, and I've spent over twenty years in the computer security industry. I grew up in New England, and then lived twenty-five years in Maryland, except for a nineteen month stay in Hyderabad, India. Now I live with my wife, our three youngest sons, and my mother-in-law in Bellevue, Washington. My novel Soul Identity is half techno-thriller, half existential journey. It depicts an organization that helps you leave your money and memories to your own future life. Think about a God-less, business-based take on reincarnation--and the consequences this could cause. Soul Intent is the sequel, and it explores why people do bad things for good reasons. It's set both in Germany during the Nuremberg trials and the present day. This is an adventure tale of stealing, hiding, and recovering Nazi Gold. I also write online travel tales, which i post at www.taleblazing.com. Check them out! |

| Author bio: Now I understand why my muse waited until I was 50 before giving me the nod. Mainstream publishers would never have touched the stuff I write. Years of humiliation and disappointment might have been too much for me to bear, and maybe I would have succumbed to full-blown alcoholism and drug addiction, and ended up by committing suicide. To save me from such a fate my muse held back until technology advanced to the point where I could safely sidestep those obscurantist gatekeepers trying to prevent me from getting to my readers. Now I can write what I like, put it up on Smashwords, and share the contents of my mind with anyone discerning enough to enjoy a certain brand of dark humour. |

Dragon Town | by Tom Lichtenberg April 21, 2011 | Free! | 18045 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I write books across a lot of different genres and styles. I've got some sci-fi, some mystery, some satire, some young adult, a little kids' book, and some just plain old-fashioned stories. Most are short and easy to read, are sometimes funny and often feature unexpected endings. Some of my books are related to each other, sharing characters, locales and plots. Snapdragon Alley, Freak City and Dragon Town comprise "The Dragon City Trilogy" The "All Geeked Up" collection includes World Weary Avengers, Ledman Pickup, and In Constant Contact "The Secret Trilogy" is 'Chaos Fiction' and includes Squatter with a Lexus, Secret Sidewalk, and Hidden Highway "Rays and Nights" is a collection of cross-genre stories that share certain characters, and includes the faux-horror Zombie Nights, the sci-fi Death Ray Butterfly and the coming-of age stories of Raisinheart Fissure Monroe features the intrepid private eye, Dawn Debris. Missy Tonight follows Orange Car with Stripes in these stories of Atheist Comic Sci-Fi Pulp Fiction. Golden is a screenplay based on Time Zone. Jimmyland is a screenplay based on Phantom of the Mall. Inspector Mole pops up all over the place. If you like one, chances are you'll like another, and if you don't, well, thanks for giving it a try! |

| Author bio: According to my own fact sheet... "Michael Angel is a professional writer whose books have been published internationally by mainstream 'dead tree' publishers in Italian, Portuguese, French, Dutch, Korean, German, Russian, and Chinese. One of his nonfiction books was selected as a textbook for upper division biology courses in the California public university system. Nothing thrills him more than to know that somewhere, right now, there are bright young people who are *required* to read his work." Wow. I like the cut of this guy's jib. If I ever meet him I'll buy him a drink. And you should too! |

Because It Feels Good | by R.J. Hamilton Dec. 23, 2011 | Free! | 28041 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I am originally from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. I resided in my hometown until graduating in 1994 when I joined the United States Army as an Infantryman. During my Army career I had 2 tours in the Balkans and another 2 more recently in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I wrote my 1st book "Self Convictions" while deployed to Baghdad. I ended my military career after 12 years of service as a Correctional Specialist working in the United States Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in December of 2009. I am currently pursuing my Bachelor's degree in English Writing at Washburn University. I currently live in Topeka, Kansas. The Self Series: "Self Convictions," "Self Consciousness," "Self Conclusions," & "Self Consequences," (in that order) are not self-help books by the way. They are suspense thrillers with a mental twist. I, along with Michael Rohr, wrote a compilation of tragic short stories and poetry titled "Dark Solo." The stories may strike closer to home than you'd expect. "And the Hand of God," is a story about the end of days as per the book of Revelations. With all of the natural disasters happening in our world, I decided to write this book. The story is about Jared, a man with a dark past, and Lily, a woman with a history herself, as they fight to survive against Mother Nature's wrath. Visit http://rjhamilton.webs.com/ for more info |

Celeste & The Eyes of the Demon | by Kevin Lazarus Jan. 30, 2012 | Free! | 13598 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Author of fantasy fiction books, supernatural thrillers and creepy tales; whose occupation behind the scenes in the entertainment industry, for better than 25 years, allowed him to work in many capacities; from Property Master, Art Director and Set Designer to Video Producer. He has produced both works of art, corporate and industrial videos. During those years he also worked as a counselor to troubled teens. His unique insight into blended families and troubled homes has helped children and families to overcome many problems. “The experiences of my youth were, to say the least, strange and unusual. My mother was torn between two worlds – Christianity and the superstitious culture of the Deep South. It seemed to me that everywhere she went, trouble followed. Not the kind of trouble you would think of in any normal sense. There were constantly disturbing occurrences that were almost always inexplicable. It would be many years before I would realize what had happened to her during her youth—which was a unique blending of Christianity with the superstitious (Voodoo) traditions of the Deep South. Her odd behaviors made a deep impression on me at a very young age. I distinctly remember, at the age of three, how she was frightened to death of the cellar. How, when I had wandered down there, she lost it. With lightning speed she ran down the stairs, picked me up and turned to run back up the stairs. It was then that I saw in her face something that would stay in my memories for the rest of my life—fear. She scolded me something fierce about not going down there. I remember thinking it must be that thing down there that was hot (the furnace). That would be logical. It was for me, even then, at that early age. But then she said something I didn’t expect. ‘There are things down there—things you can’t see—things that are evil.’ Many years later, after my mother divorced my father, she and my step-father moved the three of us to a small town out west. A curious little community that was less than welcoming to outsiders. And we were the outsiders. What I would learn during those years living there was that this small town had its own dark secrets. The whole time we were there strange things always happened. I'd walk home at night and frequently would experience someone following me. I'd hear footsteps and I'd turn around to see nothing but an empty sidewalk. There would be strange inexplicable noises coming from the basement in the middle of the night, footsteps in the snow that would stop as if someone had walked there and then disappeared and unwelcome visitors in our house when my mother and stepfather were away on dates. I would later come to believe that my mother, like a moth to light, would somehow live in places where there were always things that went ‘bump’ in the night. I could go on and on, there were so many. I've started a blog to record several of them, along with some of my personal views on family and on my works of fiction. After working 25 years behind the scenes in the entertainment industry, I've launched my career writing about one of the genres that comes easiest to me… creepy stories.†|

| Author bio: My life has been one of finding what I would love to do for a living. I tried university soon after high school, film and video major, but was not ready so I dropped out. I had a strong desire to work in the film industry, in some capacity, for many years. After dropping out of University, I thought I would opt for film school, instead of the drawn out University method of teaching one about making films. But the expense of it turned me off, and it never happened. After a few years of crappy, minimum wage jobs, I needed to do something so I decided to go back to University, but as a Computer Science major. I graduated in 2000 and have worked at a few companies, currently in the health industry as a Programmer/Analyst. It's not something I want to do for the rest of my life. I always thought it was movies I was interested in, but it is the creation of stories where my passion lies. If I'm not writing it, I'm thinking it, over and over in my head, playing it out. I've written some short stories and one novel so far. All my short stories are free to download. | Author bio: Seth Harwood grew up in the Boston area, graduated from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 2002 and currently lives in San Francisco. He teaches writing and literature at Stanford University and the City College of San Francisco. In 2005, Seth started writing Jack Wakes Up. After almost 9 months of working on the novel, he decided he was ready to podcast it. In July 2006, the Jack Palms Crime Podcast Series was born. As JACK WAKES UP was followed by A LONG WAY FROM DISNEY, JACK PALMS II: THIS IS LIFE, and JACK PALMS 3: CZECHMATE, his podcast audience grew into a sizeable world-wide following, as covered by the San Francisco Chronicle here. When Breakneck Books published JACK WAKES UP in March 2008, Seth's online audience (the Palms Daddies and Palms Mommas) jumped all over Amazon.com and bought enough copies to raise the book to #1 in Crime/Mystery and #45 overall in books. JACK WAKES UP was subsequently purchased by THREE RIVERS PRESS (Random House) and re-released on May 5th 2009. It received rave reviews from Publisher's Weekly, Michael Connelly, and Marilyn Stasio in the New York Times Book Review. Now Seth is happy to see his second novel, YOUNG JUNIUS (Oct. 10), released by Tyrus Books in hardcover, trade paperback and also as a very special, limited edition. Seth’s other jobs have included commodities floor trading clerk, bartender, copy-editor, rare book cataloguer and freelance journalist. His stories have been published in Post Road, Ecotone, Inkwell, and Storyglossia, among others. |

Ghostkiller | by Steven Savile Dec. 07, 2010 | Free! | 7155 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Steven Savile has no life. It's official. That's probably the most important thing you can know about him. So, now we've got that out of the way, the good stuff, like what's he done, where and to whom. Steve's a man of many hats - like many people without hair. Hat number one, the bright colourful scotch tweed flat cap, is Steve's original fiction. Most recently he has written SILVER. You might have noticed it. It takes up a good 90% of this site. If you didn't notice it you're probably not reading this bit either, so I guess we'll forgive you, not that you'll notice. His other stuff include various novels and short story collections like The Hollow Earth, Temple: Incarnations, Laughing Boy's Shadow, Houdini's Last Illusion, Angel Road, and the graphic novel Fragrance of You (with artist Robert Sammelin). Steve was a runner up in the 2000 British Fantasy Awards, a winner of a 2002 Writers of the Future Award, and was nominated for the inaugural 2006 Scribe Award for best novel adaptation for his novel Slaine: The Exile. His novel Primeval: Shadow of the Jaguar is currently nominated for the 2008 Scribe Award for Best Young Adult Novel. Fingers and toes are naturally crossed. Hat number two is his tie-in writing. Steve is the author of the Von Carstein Vampire trilogy (Inheritance, Dominion, Retribution) set in Games Workshop's popular Warhammer world. The individual books were gathered together into the omnibus edition, Vampire Wars, and Steve being the awkward so and so he is went and rewrote the last chapter of the last book just for that omnibus. It isn't often we get a chance to put right what once went wrong, so to speak, so apologies to everyone who read the original ending. Go to the local bookshop and check out the new end. Tell them Steve sent you if they hassle you about reading in the corner without buying the book! His final book for Games Workshop, Curse of the Necrarch, features a 60 year old hero who has a heartattack right around the page 50, and is all about the futility of heroism and war as it's generally portrayed in fantasy novels. Let's just say it was a brave book for Games Workshop to publish and opinion seems to be split down the middle as to whether it is the best or worst thing he's ever written, so he must have done something right, eh? Steve's also written the best-selling original audio novel Torchwood: Hidden for BBC Audiobooks. It was read by Naoko Mori who plays Toshiko Sato in the BBC series. One might think Steve has a thing for the lovely Naoko, as his Torchwood short story in the Yearbook released by Titan in 2008 also had a huge picture of the lovely (did we already say that) Naoko right beside his story Black Water. He also wrote the first novel based in the Primeval universe, Shadow of the Jaguar, which was a #1 bestseller in the UK. The other one you might have seen cluttering up bookshelves in dusty bookstores would be his Slaine duology which was published by Black Flame (Slaine The Exile and Slaine The Defiler). We say duology, the series was originally conceived as a trilogy and ends on a whopping cliffhanger, so again, sorry folks! Lots of apologising going on here. The rights to Slaine have reverted to Rebellion, so whether or not the trilogy will ever get its final installment is very much in their hands. Back when he was a wee lad Steve also wrote a series Star Wars books including a kids adaptation of Return of the Jedi, for Hendersons, part of Dorling Kindersley, a Jurassic Park fun fax file, and short stories four incarnations of The Doctor. Yep, that Doctor. The time lord. Tardis. His next media tie-in is an original Stargate SG-1 adventure, Shadows. Hat number three is his editorial one. He has edited a number of critically acclaimed anthologies, including Elemental, Redbrick Eden, and Doctor Who Short Trips: Destination Prague. He also compiled Smoke Ghost & Other Apparitions and Black Gondolier and Other Stories, the collected horror stories of Fritz Leiber. Hat number four, the dapper bowler hat, is collaborative work. Steve recently finished a weird western with David Niall Wilson, Hallowed Ground, and is working with James Moore on a YA trilogy, the first book of which Death Knell is rattling away on their keyboards while you read this. It is, promise you. Neither of those boys sleep. And then there's the red-headed stepchild of my writing career, Brian M. Logan, that action guy, who I'm currently plotting world domination with. We've got six full blown novels pretty much outlined in serious detail, ranging from supernatural thriller to classic Fog-like horror by way of noir monster madness. Trust me, you'll be hearing more about Bri. So what's next you ask breathlessly? Well, in no particular order, there's a short story collection from Dark Regions Press, which has no name and Steve calls The Incompleat, because, well it is... a new adventure for the crew from The Hollow Earth, called London Macabre, and Gold, the sequel to Silver. Original title eh? Never saw that one coming... but can you guess what the follow-up to Gold will be called? Well? Answers on a postcard please... you might win a prize. Maybe. |

Vultures in the Playground | by A. Sparrow July 07, 2011 | Free! | 78061 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I'm an amateur writer with zero interest in traditional publishing. Nothing against authors who still aim to squeeze a living from this moribund profession. I don't have the time or patience to mess around with that jazz. I write because I'm a fussy reader who struggled to find books worth reading at my local book shops. My shelves became littered with a grim collection of hardcovers and paperbacks I was unable to finish. It reached the point where if I wanted to be entertained by writing, I had to do it myself. My stories may be unusual, but I wouldn't call them literary or experimental. They depict ordinary people in extraordinary situations, free of the usual genre or commercial constraints. I might suggest that if you're looking for more of the same of whatever you've been reading, you'll have better luck looking elsewhere. I'm not particularly proud of any of my books, but some people seem to like them. I'm aiming higher. arrow.asp@gmail.com |

Rage | by Kimberly A Bettes Nov. 15, 2011 | Free! | 68528 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Kimberly A. Bettes lives in the beautiful Ozark Mountains of southeast Missouri with her husband and son. No, she doesn't run moonshine. And no, she doesn't make moonshine, either. Although from time to time, one would think she had partaken of a hearty batch. And yes, she has all her teeth. While she doesn't wear overalls, she knows many people who do. Before you ask, yes, she wears shoes. And socks. Constantly. It's part of her OCD. Living in the Ozarks doesn't require you to tell people to squeal like a pig. It's completely optional. Kimberly is a freelance writer and photographer. Her trademark seems to be photos of flowers with mysteriously appearing bugs that she doesn't notice while taking the photograph, only later. It's a good thing she mainly photographs flowers. God forbid she should be photographing say, a mountain and not see the grizzly bear charging at her. This would lead to a completely different Bio page. Or as some would call it, a Eulogy. Kimberly has many hobbies including knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and quilting. It's not unusual to find her in a rocking chair, knitting. But don't think she's old yet because while she's knitting, she's singing along with Eminem or Rob Zombie. After receiving many complaints from her neighbors about said singing, Kimberly has decided to try to limit the singing to showers only. So far, she's failed to live up to her end of the compromise. Fortunately for all involved parties, Kimberly's winning personality keeps her neighbors on her good side and there doesn't seem to be an imminent law suit lurking in the near future. At least not for her inability to sing. The hobby of Kimberly's that most worries those who know her is her obsession with serial killers. No, not people who hate Fruit Loops, but the people who make a dirty habit out of killing other people. They fascinate her. Not because she wants to be like them. That would make her weird. But what appeals to her is how at any second, anyone can cross that line. She likes to know what makes people tick. Other than Tourette's Syndrome. Don't worry. She doesn't write to them in prison or anything. After all, the price of stamps has skyrocketed lately. She doesn't have posters of murderers hanging on her walls. Her husband gripes too much about the thumbtack holes they leave. She just reads about them and studies them from afar. Seriously. It's completely normal. Let's call it...research. Yeah. That's it. Research for those crazy novels she writes. Speaking of those novels, Kimberly is the author of Annie's Revenge, The Good Neighbor, Minutes to Death, Rage, and several short stories, poems and songs. She has many projects in the works. If she can keep herself from procrastinating, you can expect to find some more of her work available soon. |
