I moved to Calgary when airliners still had propellers, and grew taller there. Later, I acquired an assortment of degrees in English Literature at Queen's University, though I still haven't figured out what to do with them. In Toronto, I researched computerized information systems, long before Bill Gates invented the Blue Screen of Death. I wrote my first three novels while serving as Editor of Educational Digest, and when this proved viable, I ran away from my editor's cubicle. Now I spend most of my time drawing comics. So here I am, still in Toronto, with my wife and son, a cat, various computers, tea pots, and a coffee maker. I work in the utility room, near the laundry monsters and the litter box. |

Test Pilot | by John H. Carroll Dec. 24, 2010 | Free! | 7117 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: John H. Carroll was the youngest of seven children and was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1970 where he was kept in a dresser drawer with the clean socks. Luckily he wasn’t kept with the dirty socks or else he might have grown up to become slightly warped. As a child, John spent most of his time wandering through the Mojave Desert in an attempt to avoid people. He would stare at the sky, imagining what it would be like to explore different worlds. One of his favorite memories is watching his dad build the fuselage of Evel Kneivel’s skycycle in their garage. One of his least favorite moments was watching that skycycle fall into the Snake River. (Not his dad’s fault and he has documentation to prove it, so nyah) As a teenager, John spent most of his time driving wherever he could in an attempt to avoid people. He would stare at the road, imagining what it would be like to explore different worlds. He was the captain of the chess team and lettered in golf and band while in high school and wasn’t beaten up anywhere near as much as one might imagine. As an adult, John spent most of his time staring at a computer screen in an attempt to avoid people. He stares at the monitor for hours, imagining what it would be like to explore different worlds. He has been married to his wonderful wife for 14 years and they have three obnoxio . . . wonderful children who always behave . . . when they’re asleep. John is surrounded at most times by emo bunny minions. He is their imaginary friend and they look to him for guidance. At one point they took over the world. No one noticed because they left everything exactly as it was. They gave the world back after a week because it was depressing. The Willden Trilogy is his first series of books. All of his short stories are free and he is working on various novellas as well as a new series coming out in late 2011. He writes in the evenings and weekends whenever possible. Regrettably, the family mentioned in the previous paragraph desires food and shelter, requiring the author to possess a full time job until such time as his writing makes him rich. |

On the other hand, my writing is hardly biblical. I suffer, you see, from chronic goofiness. I hope you enjoy my little stories as much as I do. If you actually, literally LOL, I'm a happy camper. | Author bio: "When I was in high school, my chemistry teacher approached me and asked with a sly grin, "You interested in mining?" I told him absolutely not. I was going to be a writer. Little did I suspect that he wanted to send me to a student conference on metallurgy where I could seek the fellowship of like-minded teens on a minimally supervised road-trip to the Big City. Undeterred by my abrupt negative response, he grumbled, "Well, you're interested in mining your own business, aren't you?" And he sent me anyway. Now I realize I should've listened more carefully to everything he said." ### Gerald Everett Jones is the author of the Rollo Hemphill series of comic novels, including My Inflatable Friend, Rubber Babes, and the forthcoming Farnsworth's Revenge. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honors from the College of Letters, Wesleyan University, where he studied under novelists Peter Boynton (Stone Island), F.D. Reeve (The Red Machines), and Jerzy Kozinski (The Painted Bird, Being There). |

And yet I don't even know if I have the right to criticise, having never been a political activist myself. *** BOOKS ON OFFER FREE VISIT MY WEB SITE *** |

Utter Obscurity: Abridged | by Ivana Hruba June 26, 2011 | Free! | 3224 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Ivana Hrubá is a lovely, lovely girl and a writer of some "notable" talent, the sum of which will, just for your entertainment, be very modestly noted here. Specializing in writing bold, quirky and outrageously entertaining fiction, Ivana is what we call an undiscovered gem, an exotic island waiting to be explored or, as some people say, a territory best left uncharted. Ivana devised her first novel at the tender age of twelve when she was but a wee little girl wearing out her brother's hand-me-downs, chasing the geese off the village green in her native Czech Republic which was then under communist rule. Filled with poultry and very long sentences, Ivana's idyllic childhood came to an abrupt end in 1983 when she and her family crossed the Alps on foot to seek a new life free of communists and their blasted queues. After a year spent frolicking in a West German refugee camp, the family finally had a gutful of that sort of adventure, and they settled in Australia in 1984 where they've been living it up ever since. Following the publication of 'A Decent Ransom', Ivana has developed the habit of talking about herself in the third person, a skill that comes in particularly handy when writing autobiographies. To this end, Ivana has also conquered her fear of appearing ridiculous due to excessive bragging as can be seen in this intro right here. In the tradition of all gifted folk, working for a living has never appealed to our author; therefore, Ivana has largely given up on that idea, preferring to spend her time writing books. How long she can keep it up will depend on how well her books sell... Ivana has recently split the atom (again) when she discovered ebook publishing on the net and proceeded to convert her entire body of work into ebooks in hopes of a tremendous public response. (This is where you come in). At the close of each day, Ivana likes to unwind in front of the computer, googling herself and drawing cartoons for her own amusement. To unwind from that pleasure, she takes her dogs, cats, mice, lice, ponies and goldfish for a walk down the beach. It's a good life for everyone involved. She'd love to have her books reviewed here on this wonderful site. Cheers! |

Checked Out: A Short Story | by Kenya D. Williamson July 05, 2011 | Free! | 763 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: I'm a verse novel and short fiction author, screenwriter (TV, film and the web), actress and poet from Levittown, Pennsylvania. After several years of acting -- and performing in dozens of TV shows, films and commercials -- I returned to my writing roots. I studied screenwriting then embraced my loves of fiction and poetry. I wrote "Depth of Focus: A Novel" and "Depth of Focus: The Stanzas." Verse novels, both books tell the same story of a young woman's quest for independence, love, career success and the healing of her broken family. But, one version of the book ("The Stanzas") is broken into the poetry/rhythm I heard when I originally wrote it. Currently living in Los Angeles, I'm writing my 2nd and 3rd verse novels -- "Siblings & Other Torture Devices" (comedy) and "Windmills" (drama/suspense). For each, I plan to release both versions. Parts of my resume are posted on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) at www.imdb.me/kenya. To see it in its entirety -- along with samples of my work -- visit my website, www.kenyadwilliamson.com. I post excerpts, short stories, news, etc. Until I have enough short fiction to complete my anthology, I'll also be posting some efforts on my Scribd and Smashwords profiles. Sammy & Sheila | by Lee Carey Aug. 08, 2011 | Free! | 1236 words | Read a sample |
| Author bio: Sandy high-fives to you from Va. Beach. I've been writing novels and short stories since '99. My first published novel is for pet lovers of all ages. "Gabby...All About Me" is a story about an unpublished author who adopts an unwanted pooch...together they become an unbeatable team. My second pet novel "Pets In Paradise" is now out and I'll admit, it's the most fun write I've done. Heartwarming for all pet lovers. I live with my dear wife who fills the role of editor since she's a graduate of UNC. Her support and assistance makes writing much easier. We live on the beach in a small coastal area known as Sandbridge Beach. I enjoy writing, surfing, fishing, playing the drums, and spending time on the coast with my wife. My motto is: Keep smilin'...and paddle hard for every wave...it might be your best ride. My novels are available here and Kindle. |

| Author bio: A simple man with a simple goal: to be happy, and hopefully make others feel the same. My work reflects my endless curiousity about the world and everything within it, yet never takes itself too seriously. Read it and think, read it and laugh, read it then put it down and curse buying it; I've put the words in there, what your own mind makes of them is not for me to say. |
