GIRLSCHOOL

When many female musicians mention their influences, the name Girlschool is never far from their lips. Jackie Chambers, lead guitarist of the band since 2000, knows what its like. “Being one of the very first all-girl bands was important enough but the fact that we are a Metal band and have lasted for 28 years and never split up now puts us into the Guinness book of records, too. We still have many female musicians coming up to us and thanking us for being there and doing what we’re doing as it inspired them to pick up an instrument too. There’s no greater compliment than that.”

This 42 years young musician was born in the UK. “I was born in Bradford, west Yorkshire but mainly grew up in Leeds a few miles away from there. I live in Streatham in South London now.”

Where does Girlschool fit into Metal? “We’ve been categorized as a New Wave of British Heavy Metal band. All these years and other bands in that genre include Motorhead and Iron Maiden, a great category to be in.”

“The first band I got into would have to be Alice Cooper, he fits into so many categories from glam rock to Metal but I have loved his music since I was at school and still continue to go see him play live.”

She still considers herself a Metal fan. “The music has so much energy! How can you not get swept up in it all?”

As for Jackie’s influences? “Alice Cooper, Rammstein, Queen, AC/DC.”

Before Girlschool she played with a few notable bands. “Deja-Vu, Virago, Bleech, Flowers For Agatha, too many bands to mention really so these were the ones that were signed.”

“It was originally hard to get accepted as a serious musician, I’ve been asked if I’m tuning the guitar for someone, which is very annoying. Girlschool get a lot of respect from the male bands so haven’t had any problems at all since being in the band.”

Jackie listens to Metal as often as she can. “All the time, Girlschool do a lot of festivals so I get to see a lot of bands from the side of the stage, can’t beat it! What a life. I watch the bands going on before us to see if there’s anyone new to get into.”

Her favorite Metal moment since joining the band? “I guess that would be when we were on tour with Motorhead in 2005 and we played at Brixton Academy. The gig was fun but what made it special was that Lemmy came on and played ‘Please Don’t Touch’ with us for the very first and probably last time ever, no rehearsal just played it, what fun.”
